I got up the morning of my Europe tour at 2.45am as an airport taxi was picking me up to get me to my 7am flight. Just like the airport bus we have. Only smaller. And dearer (especially when you convert Euros to dollars). And they pick you up from your house. I flew to Rome (after flying to London first of course) & got a taxi to the hotel. I was stopped by guys offering a fixed price of 65 euros to drive me to the hotel & telling me that a taxi would charge 75. But I’m a wake up to those dodgy people (let’s face they’re everywhere) so I grabbed a taxi which cost me about 44. Not as cheap as the 25 euros that the tour company info said but much better than 65! At the hotel I had to wait around until 2pm to meet the tour group but there were 5 others waiting as well (5 Canadians & 1 American). We then joined another group for a walking tour of Rome in the afternoon.
We went to the Spanish steps (first photo), the Trevy Fountain (second photo - there are aqueducts under Rome & you can drink the water from any of the fountains you see around the city), the Pantheon (third photo - with Judy, Monica & Rimi, all from Canada), the Cappuccini Monks & outside the Colosseum (fourth photo). Unfortunately we didn‘t get to go inside as the other group were going the next afternoon & we were leaving at lunchtime after visiting Vatican City in the morning. It's good reason to plan a trip back to Italy as well as not getting to see Pisa in Florence. There was heaps of other stuff along the way - so much info to take in I think I have brain strain.
An interesting fact I learnt - the first kind of Government handout was a portion of salt each week & that's where the word salary comes from.
While I feasted on waffles in Holland, I was looking forward to mountains of gelati in Italy.
We met the rest of our group at dinner (mostly Aussies) who are on about 9 or 10 days of a 26 day tour (I think) & I am joining them for 10 days - Rome through to Prague.
