CHINA - XIAN

The slave labour left on Saturday & I kept working away on the furniture. We bought so much stuff that I can't see myself getting it all done but I will have a darn good shot at it.
Amanda & I went to the material market again (I feel like a regular there now) & the man who was sewing our things was only half finished. I think he was a bit dodgy as he was trying to make excuses which made no sense (the fact that he was speaking Chinese may have had something to do with it - although Amanda couldn't work out what he was going on about either). So we found a girl who not only finished what he didn't but also did a whole load of other stuff. I think she is now the unofficial seamstress for Starfish. If only Amanda could convince her to come & work as a nanny & she could have someone in house who can sew.
The photos are of the group of us working on the apartment - we found out that the landlord was happy for us to paint any colour as long as it wasn't dark, after we had done the red wall. I can't remember if I have mentioned this before but in China the landlord does not do anything. If you want to paint you pay for it yourself. Even if things break down or need to be replaced you have to pay.
The second photo is of the women sewing at the fabric market. People just buy the material & then wait while they get someone to make it up for them. We left ours & picked it up later which can be risky because if you leave they tend to start working on someone else's stuff.
The last photo is of the desk that I really love & wish I could bring home. I have sanded the top back to raw wood but left the body of it as it was because I love the way it is, all kind of worn out (not that you can see it that much from the photo). I have then just varnished the whole thing. I can't wait for the apartment to be finished & set up & look forward to Amanda sending me photos - or even going back to stay in it.
